If you’re planning a trip to Copenhagen, Tivoli Gardens deserves a top spot on your list. Founded in 1843, it’s one of the world’s oldest amusement parks, and stepping through its gates feels like walking straight into a fairytale.

Just a two-minute short walk from Copenhagen Central Station, Tivoli Gardens welcomes you with lantern-lit paths, rich history, beautiful gardens, live music drifting through the air, and the sweet scent of flowers and food stalls.
I arrived at Tivoli by bus as part of an excursion with a Holland America Norway and Denmark cruise. This was my third cruise with Holland America, after a Southeast Asia cruise that began with exploring Singapore and an Alaska cruise a few years ago.
If you’re a thrill seeker, there are plenty of rides, including the beloved wooden roller coaster, Rutschebanen, from 1914. Rutschebanen is one of the oldest roller coasters still running today! But Tivoli offers far more than thrills.
This historic park has become a true national treasure and an essential part of Copenhagen’s cultural identity, cherished by generations of Danes. Even Hans Christian Andersen found inspiration wandering its grounds. Walt Disney visited in the 1950’s and was so enchanted by its magical atmosphere that it directly influenced the creation of the original Disneyland in Anaheim, California.
Tivoli has seasonal transformations for summer, Halloween, and Christmas, and dazzling Saturday fireworks above the Concert Hall. With its elegant restaurants, ballet and theatre performances, and gardens glowing under thousands of twinkling lights, Tivoli blends history, romance, and excitement in a way few places can.

Where is Tivoli Gardens?
Tivoli Gardens sits right in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark, at Vesterbrogade 3, just steps from the city’s Central Station, making it easy to reach whether you’re arriving by public transport or exploring on foot.
Despite its historic roots, Tivoli remains one of Europe’s biggest attractions, welcoming 4.25 million visitors in 2024 alone! It is the most visited amusement park in Scandinavia, and ranks among the top five most visited parks in Europe, alongside icons like Disneyland Paris, Europa-Park, and Efteling.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Tivoli Gardens really depends on the kind of atmosphere you’re hoping to experience. The park operates in four distinct seasons, each with its own decorations and events, similar to Disney World.
Many travelers find that May, June, and September offer a sweet spot, with pleasant weather, blooming gardens, long daylight hours, and slightly smaller crowds than the height of summer.

July and August bring a lively buzz, open-air concerts, and warm evenings that are perfect for dining under the light. But keep in mind that weekends in this season can be especially busy.
October is wonderful if you love autumn colors and Halloween decorations, while December feels truly magical with a festive Christmas market and holiday lights, even if the days are shorter and temperatures cooler.
Whenever you choose to go, visiting on a weekday rather than a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday can make the experience feel a little more relaxed. Tivoli’s opening hours begin at 11:00 AM, typically closing at 11:00 PM. Depending on the season, there may be extended hours until Midnight.
Tickets to Visit Tivoli Gardens
Before stepping into Tivoli Gardens, you’ll need to purchase an entry ticket. Admission covers access to the gardens and entertainment, but rides and games are not automatically included.

Choosing the right ticket option depends on how you want to experience Tivoli. If you’re planning to go on several attractions, you can add a Ride Pass for unlimited access.
Or, simply buy individual ride tickets inside the park if you prefer to pick and choose. While tickets are available at the gate, booking on Tivoli’s website in advance can save you both time and a bit of money, and weekday prices are often lower than weekends.
If you just happen to be passing by, most people don’t realize that Tivoli Food Hall does have free entry! It’s actually one of the best food markets in Copenhagen, with dozens of diverse street food stalls. From Wakha’s North African specialties, OLIOLI’s poke bowls, to La Baracca’s homemade pasta, you’re bound to find something you love.
Exploring The Gardens
The lush gardens are far more than a pretty backdrop to the rides. They are immersive, beautifully designed spaces that invite you to slow down, enjoy the park at your own pace, and breathe in the scent of blooming flowers as you wander.
Parterre Gardens
The historic Parterre Gardens, first laid out in 1943 and later refreshed with a thoughtful contemporary palette, blend structured elegance with seasonal color. Original oak water basins still anchor the design, while carefully curated plantings shift from spring blossoms to vibrant summer displays.

Hanging Gardens
Next door, the Hanging Gardens create a relaxed, classic atmosphere with tall trees, open lawns, and sweeping views toward Tivoli Lake. This area is especially popular for picnics!
Glass Hall Theatre Gardens
The Glass Hall Theatre Gardens pair elegant ceramic water bowls designed by Danish artist Linn Utzon with vibrant flower beds that are replanted each year to complement the theatre’s striking architecture.
In front of the Concert Hall, which you can see behind and off to the side of the Swing ride, rose-filled beds frame the fountain.

Jubilee Gardens
The newer Jubilee Gardens provide a leafy retreat away from the buzz of attractions, with views toward the lake, aviary, and greenhouse. Together, these distinct spaces form a living tapestry that evolves with the seasons, making sure the gardens remain an essential part of the Tivoli experience.
Experience Michelin-rated restaurants at The Pagoda
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity if you’re a true foodie. Fifteen world-renowned star chefs from around the globe rotate taking over the kitchen at The Pagoda.

For example, from May 7th to June 1st, Three-Michelin-starred Flocons de Sel and chef Emmanuel Renaut provide elegant dishes from the French Alps. You can see the rest of the prestigious lineup on the Tivoli website, where you can also book a table in advance.
Fortunately, there was very little wait the day I was there, perhaps because it was still pretty chilly. This small bite of brown bread (rugbrød) with unbelievably delicious Danish Blue cheese dizzled with honey was to die for. It was only one of the bites I enjoyed there.

Try a Beer Flight
One of the most delightful surprises at Tivoli Gardens is that you can sample beer brewed especially for the park. It adds a fun, local touch to the experience and pairs perfectly with an afternoon break between rides or an evening under the stars.
If you decide to order a tasting flight, come prepared, as it typically includes four full pours rather than small samples. This was quite a surprise, and I couldn’t finish it, but I did give it a college try.

For a particularly lively atmosphere, the Biergarten channels the spirit of an Austrian alpine lodge, complete with hearty food and big steins. Expect crisp lagers, refreshing Radlers, and other classic European styles that feel right at home alongside comforting dishes like bratwurst, pretzels, schnitzel, and goulash. There are also plant-based options and crowd-pleasing picks for younger visitors, making it an easy stop for groups with mixed tastes.
Visit the Tivoli Aquarium
Tucked on the ground floor of the Tivoli Concert Hall, the Tivoli Aquarium offers a calm and captivating escape, especially welcome on chilly days when you need a warm indoor break. This 30-meter tropical reef is home to around 1,600 marine creatures, including rays, moray eels, blacktip reef sharks, and schools of brilliantly colored fish weaving through coral formations.
Across from the main tank, you can even spot piranhas! The aquarium holds 300,000 liters of water and, when it opened in 2005, featured one of the longest viewing panels in the world!
Try your hand at Carnival Games
The carnival games at Tivoli Gardens feel like stepping into a storybook version of a classic fairground. The stalls are beautifully crafted from wood and decorated with hand-painted backdrops that give them a nostalgic charm.
From simple favorites like duck fishing to lively skill challenges such as bottle shooting, wheel spinning, and Whack-a-Mole, there is something to tempt every age and ability level.
For those who love a little rivalry, the 5 Game Challenge turns casual play into a full-on competition. You can choose any five games, mix difficulty levels from beginner to expert, and track your scores as you go. Points are tallied at the end to crown a winner, and extra tokens collected along the way can be traded for prizes, adding even more incentive to aim carefully and throw straight.
Tickets for the challenge are available at select game stalls inside the park, making it easy to gather your friends or family and jump in. If arcade games are more your style, Tivoli is also home to Denmark’s largest arcade, Jackpot 1, packed with nearly 200 machines.
See a Show
Tivoli Gardens has a wonderful schedule of shows, and your ticket to the show includes admission to the Gardens. You can go early, have dinner, and explore the park before or after the show.
Shows take place at the Glass Hall Theater (comedy), the Tivoli Concert Hall (music), or the Pantomime Theater (dance), below, which, at 150 years old, is the oldest surviving building in Tivoli and a national landmark.

Don’t Forget the Shops
A visit to Tivoli Gardens would not be complete without browsing its collection of shops, perfect for finding a keepsake to remember your day. You can explore beautiful Scandinavian home pieces at Illums Bolighus, pick up playful treasures and accessories at CeLuca Gifts, or step into a festive wonderland at Harlekin, where holiday decorations are available all year.
Fans of Danish design will also spot LEGO sets, classic wooden figurines inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales, and the famous gourmet treats from Lakrids by Bülow. For official park merchandise, the Little Tivoli Shop offers charming souvenirs that let you take a small piece of the magic home with you.
The Rides
Even if you’re not a fan of thrills, the rides at Tivoli are some of the most beautiful you can find in a modern theme park. It’s definitely worth just strolling to see them! There are too many to write about in one article, so here are a few of the standouts.
Rutschebanen
One of the park’s proudest attractions is Rutschebanen, a historic wooden roller coaster that has been running for more than a century. It still uses a brake operator who rides along in the train and controls the speed during the drops, which is something rarely seen today.

Many visitors say the best time to ride is after dark when the track winds through the park under Tivoli’s famous lights.
Dæmonen
For those who want a more intense experience, the more modern coaster Dæmonen (the Demon) delivers sharp twists on a modern steel track, and riders can add a virtual reality option that surrounds them with a fantasy world of dragons while the coaster races through its layout.

Fatamorgana
Another must-see attraction is Fatamorgana (not to be confused with the dark ride Fata Morgana at Efteling), a tall tower that offers three completely different ride styles in one structure.

Younger guests can enjoy bumper cars at the base, thrill seekers can spin high above the park in a fast-rotating ring, and those looking for something calmer can drift in gentle gondolas with a view across Tivoli.

The Flying Trunk
The park also shines when it comes to slower dark rides that focus on storytelling. The Flying Trunk carries passengers through scenes inspired by the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen, using detailed sets and narration to bring beloved Danish stories to life through a relaxed indoor journey.

Minen
Minen takes a different approach by mixing a scenic boat ride with an interactive game. For those familiar with Walt Disney World, imagine a mix between a boat ride with beautiful scenery like It’s a Small World or Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, mixed with the excitement of a laser-shooting gallery like Buzz Lightyear’s Spaceranger Spin.
Guests travel into a mysterious underground world filled with hardworking gnomes and a treasure-hoarding dragon, using laser blasters to hit glowing targets along the way. Some riders compete fiercely for the highest score, while others simply enjoy the atmosphere, which this park does especially well.
The Swing Carousel
The Swing Carousel not only has swings instead of the traditional animals you sit on, but the entire carousel lifts as it gains momentum, and even tilts at one point to take it to another level. There were many smiling faces!

Tivoli Gardens is a truly special place. I think it’s worth adding to anyone’s European bucket list, even if theme parks aren’t your thing. I’d go back just for the food!
By the way, this excursion with Holland America began with exploring a bit of the city and ended with seeing the Little Mermaid statue, so it really is the perfect day in Copenhagen. If you love architecture, history, botanical gardens, live performances, and of course, incredible food, consider Copenhagen for your next vacation.

There is an entrance fee to enter the Park, and rides cost extra unless you purchase the unlimited rides pass.
