Top tip

My top tip for making this drink is to shake just until it’s icy cold but not too long to water it down. And definitely add the whipped cream. You only live once!

Our Grasshopper Cocktail recipe is so delicious and super easy to make. You can wow your house-party guests by whipping up a batch of after-dinner drinks or simply enjoy one yourself at the end of your day. Think of this refreshing and creamy recipe when you’re looking for a fun and festive cocktail for spring or summer.

Made with creme de menthe and white creme de cacao, this colorful grasshopper drink recipe had me at the first sip. The whipped cream and grated chocolate give it more of a boozy dessert feel, but it definitely has a kick! The presentation is really lovely, but festive cocktails aren’t just for the holidays; you can enjoy this one year-round.

A bit of history about this recipe, born here in the United States. A bar in the French Quarter of New Orleans (called Tujague’s) claims that its original owner, Philip Guichet, first invented this classic cocktail in 1918. Whether or not he really tried it for the first time, the Grasshopper was a beloved Southern staple in the 50’s and 60’s.

  • DELICIOUS – The combination of heavy cream, grated dark chocolate, and rich-tasting liqueurs creates a truly indulgent after-dinner drink.
  • BOOZY – The green creme de menthe and white chocolate liquor work hand-in-hand to give this recipe a special flair. And with such simple ingredients, you can easily adjust the strength of the beverage to your personal taste.
  • EASY TO MAKE – This is absolutely one of the easiest cocktail recipes I’ve made. There’s no wonder people have been enjoying this drink since the early 1900s!

Shake just enough to mix the ingredients well and pour the drink into a martini glass or coupe glass (whichever suits your style)!

Layer with whipped cream and dark chocolate shavings, and add a mint sprig as a final touch. The mint leaves really help to bring out the drink’s vibrant green color.

Between its distinct sweet flavor and colorful presentation, this recipe has held a permanent spot in both bars and households across the Southern United States.

Tips & Variations

As mentioned at the start, shaking this cocktail is one of the most important steps in this recipe. To make sure your Grasshopper stays creamy and doesn’t get watered down, be careful not to shake it for too long.

If you love the drink but want a lower-calorie option, you can easily replace the heavy cream in this recipe with whole milk or skim milk (though we recommend whole at a minimum, so your Grasshopper stays nice and creamy).

You could also try coconut milk, but not the canned variety. Pick up a bottle of coconut milk in the refrigerated section of your grocery store.

While we didn’t add it to ours, you can also drizzle chocolate syrup on top of the whipped cream for a decadent finish. And did you know that changing the ingredients in your Grasshopper can actually change the name?

  • For a “Flying” Grasshopper, replace the cream with Vodka.
  • Make a “Frozen” Grasshopper float with mint or vanilla ice cream.

  • Shake well, just enough to mix the ingredients.

  • Pour the drink into a martini or coupe glass.

  • Layer the top with whipped cream and grated dark chocolate.

  • Add a sprig of mint.

Feel free to use whole milk instead of heavy cream. It will reduce the calories significantly and not change the taste that much. I like to use Fairlife whole milk as it’s ultra-pasteurized and really creamy.
